Is Totally Safe Moon Project Made With AI?

Updated ยท 4 min read

According to its developers, Totally Safe Moon Project was not made with generative AI. The team says the game uses purchased assets and their own artwork, and the key art was drawn by artist Alexey Kocheev without AI. The publisher has acknowledged using AI tools to translate the Steam store description, which is why it removed a blanket "No AI used" claim from the short description. Steam shows no AI-generated content disclosure for the game.

"AI" is one of the most discussed topics around the game: three of the 15 threads on the Steam discussion board at launch are about it, and the first negative review accused it of being "slop", before the reviewer edited it to apologise. Here is what was actually said.

What the developers said

July 2026 โ€“ "The banner art is not AI generated." Replying to a player who thought the key art looked AI-generated, a developer wrote: "The banner art is not AI generated. We get a lot of similar accusations, and I get it... But based on things I know, the Artist that made the capsule art did not use AI at all."

October 17, 2026 โ€“ "We didn't use AI." A second developer account answered the thread "looks AI generated" with a short denial.

October 27, 2026 โ€“ the full explanation. In the same thread, an account from publisher rokaplay posted the answer marked as the solution:

  • "Totally Safe Moon Project is being developed by a small team of real people. The developers don't use generative AI to create the game. They use a combination of purchased assets and their own artwork."
  • "The thumbnail itself was created by artist Alexey Kocheev."
  • "We recently removed the 'No AI used' statement from our short description... because we realized the statement was simply too broad."
  • "We've used AI tools to help translate our Steam store page description into additional languages."
  • The post also admitted the reply itself "got a little help from ChatGPT to organize our thoughts and polish the English."

What the Steam page says today

As of November 1, 2026:

  • The long description on Steam still opens with "No AI was used in the development of this game!!!"
  • The short description no longer includes a No AI line, matching the publisher's explanation.
  • There is no "AI Generated Content Disclosure" section on the store page. Valve requires developers to disclose AI-generated content when they submit a game.

Why people think it looks AI-generated

Most of the suspicion is about the capsule/key art, the colourful illustration with bean-like characters on a rickety tower. Players called it "AI" on sight, while others replied that it "looks like 3D + Photoshop". The in-game art is a simple stylised 3D look with pill-shaped characters, and the developers said they use purchased asset packs alongside their own art, which is common for small indie teams.

The second factor is the wider "friendslop" debate on YouTube and Steam about cheap, short co-op party games. One launch-day reviewer called this game "slop" and said it felt "prompted in one night", then edited the review: "so apparently it is not AI, so sorry to the dev about the false accusation. But the game does still feel very janky and unpolished tho."

Who made the game?

Fake Moon is a two-person team. In their May 2026 Reddit post the developers wrote "My friend & I are working on a game..." and their launch post on Steam calls them "a tiny team". The game took about a year to develop. Read more in release date and price and our review roundup.

Our take

We can only report what the developers and publisher have said publicly. Their statements are consistent: no generative AI in the game's art or content, a named human artist for the key art, and AI used for translation and for polishing a forum post. If you want to judge for yourself, the official trailers on YouTube show plenty of real gameplay.
