Totally Safe Moon Project UFOs and Asteroid Rain: How to Survive
Updated ยท 4 min read
In Totally Safe Moon Project, UFOs show up during the climb to abduct players and damage your tower; you can shoot them down with the fireworks gun or by throwing heavy objects at them. Higher up, asteroid rain (a meteor shower) smashes through the upper floors and knocks players off. You cannot stop the asteroid rain, so build wide platforms, keep the umbrella equipped and repair the gaps once it passes. Both hazards have achievements attached.
These events are what turn a calm building session into chaos. Here is what we know from the official achievement list, launch-week gameplay videos and player reports on Steam.
UFOs

What they do. UFOs fly in around the tower and pick up players with a green beam. Several groups on YouTube were abducted mid-build ("I'm getting abducted!"), and one Steam reviewer summed up their run as "got kidnapped by (spoiler)". While a UFO holds you, you are stuck. UFOs also shoot at players and damage the tower; Ultimate TnT's group noticed that "when the UFOs die, they break stuff" too.
How to kill them.
- Fireworks gun โ the most common answer in recorded runs. It is a tool you can unlock from supply drones; see upgrades and tools.
- Throw things โ houses and buses thrown with the Gravity Gun work ("They're not immune to houses"). Be careful not to throw the house you are standing on.
- Teamwork โ if a friend gets abducted, everyone else focuses the UFO holding them.
Achievements: I Want to Believe (destroy your first UFO, about 82% of players) and Alien Invasion (destroy 10 UFOs in total, about 44%).
Silver lining. Downed UFOs can become building material. One streamer noticed that a section of his group's tower that started as wood ended up "almost all UFOs", and another said a UFO saved him from falling all the way down.
Asteroid rain (meteor showers)
What it does. Higher up, the sky turns orange and burning rocks rain down around the upper tower. Players in Geeky Pastimes' run saw meteorites hitting the ground and knocking their windmills flying; RealOutlawNico's group got "wrecked" by a second meteor storm near the top. A player who joined an early playtest complained on the Steam forums that "you have like 1/3 of your entire tower taken out by a single meteor shower".
How to survive it.
- Stand on something wide. Narrow beams and car roofs are where people get knocked off.
- Keep the umbrella equipped. If you are hit, open it and glide to the nearest platform instead of falling to the ground.
- Don't build during the shower. Wait for it to end, then repair.
- Build redundant routes. A second connection between two levels means one destroyed piece does not cut the tower in half.
- Use the grappling hook if you have it. Players used it to get back up after being knocked off.
Achievement: A Rainy Day (survive asteroid rain for the first time, about 59% of players).
Other hazards high up
- Oxygen. Near space an oxygen bar appears. If it runs out you pass out and fall. Buy and place Oxygen Totems; see the walkthrough.
- Wind. One German group noticed it was windy near the top of their tower but calmer at the very top.
- Satellites. The hidden achievement Clear Sky asks you to take down a satellite, so satellites are part of the sky too.
- Your friends. Grabbing players and throwing them off the tower is so common it has its own achievement (This Is Sparta!, throw your friend from above 125 m).
- Falls. With the Fall Damage setting on, long drops knock you out. Teammates revive by holding E; otherwise you respawn at the bottom.
Is it worth turning fall damage on?
The hazards are manageable with fall damage off. Turn it on only for the Not Afraid achievement or if your group wants the extra tension, ideally once you have the umbrella and grappling hook. More tips in the beginner guide.
FAQ
How do you kill UFOs in Totally Safe Moon Project?
Shoot them with the fireworks gun or hit them with thrown objects such as houses and buses. Your first kill unlocks I Want to Believe and ten kills unlock Alien Invasion.
What happens if a UFO grabs you?
UFOs pick players up with a beam and you are stuck until it lets go. In recorded runs, teammates responded by shooting the UFOs down with fireworks or thrown objects.
Can you stop asteroid rain?
No. Asteroid rain is a scripted hazard during the upper climb. Hold on to a wide platform, use the umbrella if you get knocked off, and repair the tower afterwards.
Do UFOs destroy your tower?
Yes. Players report UFOs breaking parts of the tower, and when a UFO is destroyed it can also knock pieces loose as it falls.
